Data-driven greening in practice: pilot in Dronten

Together with the municipality of Dronten, CROW has developed a digital twin in a pilot project to gain a better understanding of greening: where is greening needed and where is it feasible to realize more greenery?

This involved examining both above-ground and underground data – such as cables and pipelines, existing infrastructure, and the design of public spaces. To this end, nationally available open data was supplemented with data from the Municipality of Dronten itself, such as its own rules regarding distances to cables and pipelines and its own tree data.

“Planting a tree involves more than you think. It was precisely by concretely calculating the process in Dronten that it became clear how many factors play a role in determining suitable planting locations.”

Cathy de Jongh, Knowledge Worker Green and Climate Adaptation at CROW.

The calculation model developed in the pilot was built with applicability in other municipalities in mind. It is now being further tested in a second pilot at the municipality of Soest.
