EDU Event 2020 Q and A’s

GIS and Geodesign by Maxim Knepflé, Tygron

Can I load in a BIM model?

Yes, it is possible to import 3D models, such as a BIM model or a SketchUp model into the Tygron Platform. Therefore the original 3D file format has to be converted to the I3S format with a SLPK file. See for example:

Read more about I3S and SLPK here:

See the steps on how to create a SLPK file from your 3D model here:

When I Change my building shape in QGIS does the Tygron Platform take the new shape in account with calculating for example a heat overlay?

Yes when changing the building shape in for example QGIS and saving the edits, the Heat stress overlay (or other Grid Overlays) are being recalculated. Make sure the Auto update is on for automatic recalculation or update the Overlay(s) manually after changing the shape.

Can I make a story map?

Yes, you can. Use the WMS link to create a StoryMap with the data from your Tygron Platform project:

Real-time calculations- do they typically take about 15 seconds as in the example just now? Or, does it depend on the size of the calculation that has to be performed?

The Tygron Platform is designed for interaction – therefore, calculation times are generally very short. However, there are aspects that influence calculation times.

For insight in calculation time, see:

For tips on performance see:

Can I get more information on the (type of) student projects that the participants came up with in the Student Contest?

You can find more information on the Student Contest here:

Is it possible to change the geodata in ArcGIS (like QGis) and see the results in Tygron?

In ArcGIS Pro it is possible to view the Tygron Platform Geo data, but not to edit and save the edits. In ArcMap you can also view the data, but we have not tested if it is possible to edit the Geo data. Of course you can experiment with it yourself.

Read how to view the data in ArcGIS (ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro) here: and

Is there a way to create SLPK without ArcGIS pro? And for earlier version of ArcGIS, like 10.x?

We currently know of creating a SLPK file with ArcGIS Pro and FME. We work with international standards as much as possible to make such an approach possible. It is not possible however with ArcMap (ArcGIS 10.x). See for the steps to create a SLPK file with ArcGIS Pro:

Integrating the Tygron Platform in the course Climate Proof Development of Cities and Strategic Planning in 2019 by Mendel Giezen, University of Amsterdam

Mendel, how much time was available for the students?

The students were following two parallel courses of 20 hours per week and one content driven tutorial per week.

We do a project on climate resilient cities at the moment too. But getting them to work now is difficult. How did you overcome this? How did you meet your learning goals?

I had to change the setup because some groups were not able to use Tygron for their analysis. In my assessment I did not require them to use the Tygron engine, but they did
have to look for other geo data sources. Some questions also did not require the Tygron platform, the students could find the answers in the literature and in the lectures.

How to help students, as they rely heavily on us as teachers? More assistance to them?

Making use of MOOC learning environment could be useful for helping the students. It would also help if we had people who were skilled in teaching how to use the software. One possibility for that would be to have an expert student assistant who are technically skilled. Moreover, making students understand that they should try and search for
answers themselves as it will prepare them for working in real life environment would be of great help to the students and therefore it could be an important task of the teacher. Another idea for helping students with working with the Tygron software could be a student exchange where students from another department who are experienced in working with GIS data could help out others.

Did you work with an ‘opdrachtgever’?

At the moment the program is too full for that, but we are trying to change it and for one course we are working on cases with the municipality of Amsterdam.

Translating science to policy with the Tygron Platform by Henk van Hardeveld, Waternet

Do you have students assignments at hand? Are there more public water organizations that have student assignments?

Is this special water module easily accessible?

The Water Module is accessible for all Tygron customers, this goes for all Tygron functionalities. See the following link for more information on how to use the water module in your project:

To get started with the water module, we have also several demo projects available for all users to see different use cases of the water module. To access these demo projects, log in to the Platform and open the Demo Rainfall or Demo Breach project.

See for documentation: and

Henk, if I heard it correctly in your presentation. you talk about modelling heat stress and the impact of certain measures. Can you tell a little bit more about that please? How does the program react on it? Does it give you useful results?

For more information on the heat stress module, see the documentation on our Wiki:

We also have the demo Heat stress project available for all users to experiment with measures, their impact on Heat stress and to analyze the results. To access the project, log in to the Platform and open the Demo Heat Stress project.

Lessons learned on using Tygron in online teaching methods by Karin Wilterdink, Aeres hogeschool

Did you work with an opdrachtgever Karin?

Not for the course where the students play the climate game, but for other courses we always try to have external partners that give assignments to the students. In the whole curriculum of the study there are around 10 of such projects. Students always love to work for external commissioners because they feel like they are contributing to solving a real-life problem and that way they are also being prepared for the real life and job market.

General questions

If we want to see how environmental change can affect people’s social behaviour (like social interaction), is there any data available in Tygron? or is it possible to do it with Tygron? any tips...

There is a lot of data available in the Tygron Platform that can be used for social behavior studies, such as the CBS data on demography. See for an overview of the data used for generating projects in the Tygron Platform:
You can also easily add your own data to the Platform to enrich you analysis using the Geodata wizard:
This is a relevant example (in Dutch):

There is a lot going on with cloud gaming and cloud computing. Are you considering this for the future so that the hardware is not such an issue anymore?

Yes, we are continuously following the latest developments to see how it can be of added value to our customers, this includes also the cloud gaming and cloud computing developments. For now, you can find our hardware specifications here:

I am wondering, is Tygron developing hybrid games/models? I run a 4TU. Urban Resilience project on open educational resources. We are developing a resilience serious game and connecting it to living labs cases studies. We are currently in the game conceptualization stage, looking for municipalities with real-world resilience dilemmas for students to evaluate AND early adopter educators with students who can help us test in 2020/2021.

There are several examples of Tygron customers building their own hybrid games/models based on the Tygron Platform. See for example the following project (in Dutch) :

Do you think the free Edu license is sufficient for students to do projects that add value for decision making processes? Or can it only be used if one or more stakeholders have a license?

Yes, with the Free Edu License the students can create their own project, albeit not that large, but sufficient for a use case of a municipality to demonstrate the added value. See for example this use case from students of Leiden university:

Hi! Where can I find the recording of this meeting?
